Golf Betting Explained

Golf has plenty of ways that you can choose to bet on it. The professional level of the sport is generally played in tournaments where the best performing players make a cut, where the number of golfers left in the competition is drastically reduced. It is possible to bet on the outcome of the tournament, the performance of an individual golfer or even a statistic like total number of birdies – holes played at one under par - in the entire competition. One of the most popular bets is on the overall winner.

Odds to Win

This sort of golfing bet is probably the easiest to understand for anyone who is new to the sport. A bookmaker will post odds for each of the players before the tournament on the likelihood of them becoming the overall winner. Like horse racing, this is a simple question of predicting the winner and is subsequently by far the most popular type of bet in golf. Remember that as wagers are made, so the odds may change. It is possible to bet once play has started but bear in mind that, if your chosen golfer is playing well up to that point, that his or her odds will shorten.

Match Up Bets

Even though golf is usually an individual sport, players play a course in pairs making for interesting match ups. In a golfer match up bet, you are making a head to head wager between players where the bookmaker makes odds on which one will do the best. It is like betting on the outcome of a football match or a two horse race. Match up bets can be settled after one round only or, in bigger tournaments, you can wager against which golfer you select will end up ahead of the other one listed on the leaderboard over the entire competition.

Spread Betting

If you like to spread bet – that is predicting if an outcome will be higher or lower than a statistic given by a bookmaker – then golf is the game for you. A typical example of a spread bet will be that a chosen golfer will play an entire round at par. If you think the player will come in over or under par, then you can wager a spread bet, by predicting how far their score will differ from par. Spread bets can also be made on the total number of holes-in-one, during a tournament or the number of putts made by a player.
